CRESCO, Iowa (May 7, 2014) – Segs4Vets has been distributing Segways to wounded veterans since 2005. In 2014, though, they’re poised to take their organization to the next level, courtesy of a new trailer from Featherlite.
“This terrific trailer is a great way for us to spread the news about our mission,” said Jerry Kerr, President of Segs4Vets, a project of Disability Rights Advocates for Technology (DRAFT). “We have awarded more than 1,200 Segways so far, and we don’t want to stop until we meet the needs of every wounded warrior with mobility challenges.’’
The trailer debuted in Las Vegas, and from there has gone to presentations around the United States to show the value of the Segway for the disabled. It will also help demonstrate how universally designed technology can create a level playing field for people with disabilities.
“This trailer allows us to maintain a consistent assessment and training program,” Kerr said. “The video screen installed on the side of the trailer not only spreads our message but is a great tool for the classroom portion of our training. Now we can do all of our training outside. We can even use the ramp on this trailer to help vets practice riding up and down inclined surfaces on their Segways.”
In addition to the presentation and training, the trailer also features a shop area in the front. “Vets can bring their Segways, get them assessed, and if they need a repair, we can do it right there,” Kerr said.
The versatility of the trailer has been a happy surprise for Segs4Vets. “I was looking for a quality trailer, and I happened on Featherlite,” Kerr said. “I wanted something that would last and be a good investment, but when I started talking with Featherlite we ended up designing a trailer that would do so much more than I ever thought possible.”
